[Our Own Correspondent] HOKITIKA, March 20. The protection work at the wharf is proceeding satisfactorily. The river st.ll shows a tendency to cut along the wharf, and there is deep scouring at the top end, and the Publ.-c Works Department staff is dumping stone at the cut above the wharf. The ston.e will present a formidable protection against flood waters, and hold the main bank from erosion. The embankment may create a problem for whitebait fishermen. Formerly shoals used to go up the river under the wharf, but may in future be unable to escape, and there may be here a “big rock” similar to that in the Grey River. Prospective fishermen are casting longing! eyes at the rocks and sorting out likely positions. The motorship Gael, which is undergoing overhaul at Nelson, is expected to come off the slip this week, and will proceed to Tarakohe to load cement for Hokitika. After discharge here she will proceed to Okuru and Jackson Bay, and thence to Wellington. Mr A H. Lawn, a member of the Canterbury Education Board, paid a visit of inspection to schools in South Westland yesterday, and left to-day to attend a meeting of the B< At d 'Kakapotahi, South Westland, river erosion is menacing the settlement. It may become necessary to shift' some houses unless the river changes its course. At the meeting of supporters to form St. Mary’s Rugby Football Club the following officers were elected: Patron Bev. Father Finerty; President, Mr. J. Milne; Club Captain, Mr. M. Davidson; Coach, Mr. J. Devaney; Secretary, Mr. R. Quinn; Treasurer, Mr H. Kortegast; Third Grade Coach, Mr. T. W. Gifford; School Team Coach, Rev. Father Keane; Committee, Messrs C. Henderson, E. Allen, W. Smith, S. Davidson, T. Clohe’r and J. O’Connor. ■ A number of Vice-Presidents were also elected. Subscriptions were fixed as: Seniors 10s juniors ss, school children (football fund) Is. It was decided to apply to the West Coast Union .for affiliation. The club colours are light blue A request by Mr. M. Davidson (former West Coast representative half-back, who will coach the new club) to organiser under the local sub-Union, was supported. Mr. S. Bassett presided at a meeting of the Lake Kanieri Yachting and Boating Club, there being a large attendance of members. It was resolved to make a parking place for motor cars at the Lake, and deepen the approach to the boat jetty, also to hold a regatta on Easter Monday, including three yacht races. Greymouth Centre advised that Idle Along Championships would be held on the West Coast this season, the trials at Lake Kanieri' and the finals at Lake Brunner; also that the Tauranga Yacht for boys was now being introduced by the Greymouth and Moana Clubs. It was resolved to encourage as many junior members as possible to build yachts of this class. The club members journeyed to the Lake on Sunday, and with the assistance of a tip lorry and many, willing helpers, a big improvement was made to the parking area and approach to the jetty. , Hokitika Club beat Greymouth Club at tennis on Sunday at Hokitika, the final figures being: Hokitika 21 sets 193 games; Greymouth 11 sets IGL games. Results were: Ladies’ Singles: O Stapleton lost to M. Costello 4/6; N. Butland beat Mrs. Hopkinson 6/3; A. Cowdroy beat M. RendaH L. Sherman beat Miss Clarke 6/5: L. Baird lost to Miss Finlay 4/6; M. Groufsky beat Miss Butler 6/4; J. Mitchell beat Miss Sequin 6/4. Mens Singles: Butland lost to Darby 4/6; Arnott beat J. Dowdall 6/2; Baird beat Hoskins 6/2; Stephens beat Cottle 6/2; Baigent beat Crowe 6/4; Freitas lost to Newton 1/6; Reader beat Hopkinson 6/0; Sherman beat Smith 6/2. Ladies’ Doubles: O. Stapleton and Mrs Butland beat Misses Costello and Hopkinson 9/6; A. Cowdroy and R. Stapleton lost to Misses Clare and MacGuire 8/9; L. Sherman and M. Groufsky beat Misses Finlay and Butler 9/7; Mrs. Baird and J. Mitchell beat Misses Bendall and SeI quin 9/8. Men's Doubles: Butland ' and Arnott lost to Darby and Dowdall 8/9; Baird and Sherman beat Hoskins and Cottle 9/5; Stephens and Reader beat Crowe and Newton 9/3; Baigent and Freitas beat Smith and Hopkinson 9/2. Combined Doubles: Freitas and Miss Mitchell lost to Crowe and Miss Sequin 1/6; Butland And Miss Stapleton lost to Darby and Miss Costello 5/9; Arnott and Mrs. Butland beat Dowdall and Mrs. Hopkinson 9/5; Stephens and Mrs. Cowdroy beat Hopkins and Miss Finlan 9/3; Baird and L.
