IWO JIMA CAMPAIGN

THE FINAL PHASE. (Received March 19, 7.25 p.m.). A communique from Admiral Nimitz’s headquarters stated: Marines on Iwo Jima Island on Sunday moppd up isolated remnants of the enemy garrison in rugged terrain in the northern part of the island. Marine uniforms were again found on enemy soldiers. One of them stopped one of our ambulances, wounded the driver, and escaped. Enemy snipers have continued to be active. Our Army lighters on Sunday bombed and strafed barges, radio and radar facilities' on Chichi Jima. Army Liberators on Friday and Saturday bombed an airfield on Chichi jima. Liberators, without opposition, bombed Shimushiro in the Kurile Islands, north of Japan, on Saturday. Fighters, divebombers, and torpedo-planes on Saturday borfibed radio' towers, an airstrip, and other targets on Yay Island. Marine aircraft on Saturday and Sunday attacked Babelthaup in the Palau Islands.
