ST. PATRICK’S SPORTS
Big Chop to W. Maloney SUCCESSFUL ATHLETICS AND CYCLING EVENTS. St. Patrick’s sports were held at Victoria Park on Saturday afternoon in sunny; weather. There was a large attendance of the public, who saw a big programme of events, which included chopping, amateur athletics, cycling, National dancing, school events, and a baby show. Various stalls on the ground were well patronised. The customary procession, preceding the sports, from the Hibernian Hall to the park, proved one of the finest seen on this occasion for many years. An outstanding feature was that presented by. the uniformed members of the Catholic Nurses’ Guild, which brought prominently before the public eye the importance of the hospital service in the life of tlw community, and created much interest. The procession was led by the Municipal Band and also included Convent school girls and float, Catholic Red Cross meinbers and float, Marist Bros.’ school boys and float, Grey Highland Pipe Band, Catholic Youth Movement members and float, Marist Brothers’ Old Boys, Football Club members and float,'Hibernian Society members and float, and members of the clergy. Keen competition and some excellent finishes 'were seen in the chopping events. There was a particularly close finish in the final of the 14-incn underhand chop, which was won by. W. Maloney from T. Donnelly and P. Malone. Malone had a handicap of 10 seconds. J. Hagan, from 11 seconds, put up a great showing to win the second heat in 38 seconds. F. Wilson won the 12-inch chop from Laurie Williams and P. Power, a close and exciting finish being seen in this event also. Hagan chopped well in the first heat to take third place from a handicap of 18 seconds, while H. Wilson, from 16 seconds, took third place in the second heat. The heavy track was generally too much for th e back-markers in the cycling events, their handicaps, in view especially of the conditions, being reckoned unduly great. However, the well-known champion, D. Morland, one of six visitors from Christchurch, managed to get third place in the two mile event, after giving away 325 yards to the winner. Morland was also the winner of a special scratch race which was added to the programme. G. Nelson and A. Plinks did best among the local riders, Nelson winning the mile and half mile handicaps from Hinks, and being second to him in the two mile event. In the amateur athletic events also, a heavy track set the back markers in the long distance events a hard task, though! J. Fitzgerald ran a good race from scratch in the ,440 yards to get second place. A. White was an outstanding competitor, winning the 120 yards hurdles from scratch, after being further handicapped on his performances in recent weeks. He put up easily the best performance in the long jump to secure second place from scratch with a jump of more than IS feet. A. Blackic, a youthful competitor, maintained his form of recent weeks, to got. third place in the high jump. J. McKenzie was unfortunate enough to spike himself in this event. In the shot put, H. Cloak won from scratch with a put of just over 38 feet. A junior competitor, V. Hahn, did well in putting the senior shot 30 feet. The Hokitika men put up a good showing, ai)d it is to be hoped that a club will be’formed there before very long. CHOPPING. 12-inch Underhand Chop (birch): Ist Heat: E. Lemon (3 secs) 1; F.
