TERESIENSTADT

(From the report sent by. the Underground Jewish Labour Movement ol Poland May 24th, 1944.) “Teresienstadt is a camo assigned for Jews from Czechoslovakia. I cabled you about a month and a half a°-o that the liquidation of the Jews ‘ there was in the offing. I don’t know i whether you received my cable, and deem it wise, therefore, to repeat the information in order to call the attention of the world to this new massacre, that is being prepared. Tens of thousands of Jews from Czechoslovakia and other countlies have been brought to Teresienstadt. The prisoners in this camp are allegedly under the supervision of the International Red Cross. Several months ago a few thousand Jews were snared away from Teresienstadt to Oswiecim, by being promised good working conditions there. For some time they actually did live quite decently in Oswiecim and occupied several barracks there. However, in March, 1944, the majority of them

were suffocated in gas-chambers. Before they died, the Germans compelled them to mail letters to their relatives praising the living and working conditions in Oswiecim. All these letters to relatives and • friends in Teresienstadt were post-dated. They are being kept in the political department of the camp administration and will be mailed to Teresienstadt in order to accelerate the task of deporting the Jews there to the deathcamp as Oswiecim. “At practically the same time, eight English war prisoners 7 employed in a large synthetic rubber factory near Oswiecim, were also suffocated by gas. A number of Russian officers, prisoners of war, were hanged in Oswiecim, in accordance with an order from Berlin.” —“THE GHETTO SPEAKS”
