WATAROA NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent]. Rev. F'ather O’Gorman, Parish Priest, commences his long south trip to Jackson Bay this week.Jn company with Mr J. Conradsen, Overseer, P W.D., who will act as guide and philosopher. This journey, which is usually made by plane, will be the first on horseback for many years. Since the death ol the late Captain Mercer the plane service has been irregular. i Mr Gordon, Butler, of Wataroa, should be recommended for a Ro.yal Human e Society award, for his pluck and bravery in rescuing the two fishermen at Bruce Bay, as reported in the “Argus” last week. This is the second occasion that rescue work has been carried out in the Bay. Many years ago Patrick Nolan, now residing at Koiterangi, swam out to sea on a horse three times, and brought a man ashore each trip. For this brave act he was awarded the Royal Humane Society.’s silver medal. A number of local farmers are having their appeals reviewed at a sitting of the Armed Forces Appeal Board, to be held in Hokitika this week. . ,

The Harihari patriotic race meeting, which was to have been held last Saturday, had to be postponed on account of rain. The dance was held in the evening, and was attended by a number of Wataroa people. Miss Katie Nolan and Mr Malcolm McBride won the Monte Carlo, and Mr and Mrs C. Donnelly the lucky spot, while Mr J. Curtain, junr., won the prize for the best spot in Westland. Dr. Nixon’s furniture has arrived, and has been placed under cover pending the early arrival of the doctor. ' The directors of the Wataroa Cooperative sale yards have decided to carrv, out the necessary improvements to the yards, and expect to have them completed in time for the sale to be held next month. The putting in hand of the work of preventing the overflow of the Wataroa river from going on to settlers’ holdings has not yet been commenced. The authorities should treat this matter as urgent, as delay may mean a dangerous situation arising.
