HOKITIKA NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent]. HOKITIKA, February 18.' Heavy showers fell to-day at frequent intervals, but there seemed no likelihood of a flood such as might affect the wharf Subsidence. To-day Public Works Department men and a bull-dozer continued at work on the job of preparing for the depositing of rock in the place where the wharf has been destroyed. Cabinet has considered the Engineer’s report in regard to the protection work to be put in hand. Following the C'abiVt meeting, Hon. J. O.’Brien telephoned the Hokitika Borough Council and the Harbour Board that Cabinet proposed that the two local authorities should find the sum of £5OO towards the cost of the protection work. The proposals were discussed by the Mayor (Mr Elcock) and the Chairman of the Harbour Board (Mr M. H. Houston), and were referred to each member of the local authorities. The Minister was lated advised that the sum mentioned would be found.

’ Yesterday Messrs Ron Guthrie and Massey 7 Reid left on the first stage of a tramp from Hokitika through S'outh Westland and over- the Ha'ast Pass thence to Lake Wanaka. After a short, stay at Lake Wanaka, the trarnpers will return by the same route. The trarnpers are well known as the producer and secretary of the local Revue Society, which, it is stated, will on their return prepare to produce another revue.
