[Our Own Correspondent]. WESTPORT, Feb. 16 The Kaitoa sailed this morning for Nelson. The Titoki arrived la*>t night from Wellington, loaded 101 Nelson and sailed this morning, inc Wingatui is expected to complete loading and sail for Wellington tonight The Te Aroha has completed discharging cargo and sailed toi Little Wanganui. , , Mr. and Mrs. J. Douglas, returned from Motueka last evening, and are to leave for Christchurch within a few days to take up their residence there.
Mr. J. Ward returned yesterday from attending a Land Board meeting at Nelson. (Mrs. P. Betts, has arrived from Palmerston North on a visit to her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Ward, Fairdown. Mr. and Mrs. G. Robinson and family Inangahua Junction are visiting Westport prior to leaving for the Fox Glacier where they are to reside in future. Mr. A. Prendeville returned from Huntly yesterday-. With Messrs v. Dowgray and H. Carson, he was today engaged in hearing disputes in connection with coal mines in the Buller area. The following officers were electea at the annual meeting of the Buller Medical Association: Chairman, » Mr. R. B. McGregor; vice-chairman, Mr. J. Fairbairn; trustee, Mr. E. Falconer; auditors, Messrs T Parfitt, H. ,M. Hennessy; secretary, Mr. J. Mears; executive committee, Messrs A. Hill, L. Walsh, E. Jenkins, J. Carey, W P. Jackson and C. Roselli. The Buller Cricket Association has invited the Reefton Association to send two teams to play at Westport on Saturday, February 24. It has also decided to play the return maten with Greymouth on Sunday, February 25, at Greymouth, the team to be selected when the players available are known. . The Westport Borough Council is receiving requests for electric current which at the present time, it cannot supply at a price that win compare with the rates ruling wnen there is a Government electric supply in operation. The Council has suggested that the Government establish a power station in the district the Buller and Four Mile Rivers being regarded as suitable sources from which a supply could be obtained. It is considered that the proposal, it adopted, would link up the east and West Coast supplies so as to overcome any weather troubles that might occur on either side of the island. , „ The Technical School Governors at a fully attended meeting accepted the resignation of Mr. W. P. Jackson, parents’ representative, as a protest against his (Mr. Jackson’s) son and Miss Phyllis Lemon being jointly awarded the distinction of Dux oy the Principal. Mr. Jackson, who had at the previous meeting tendered ms resignation stated that as Miss Lemon had gained more marks tnan his son, Clifton Jackson, she should have alone been designated Dux. ine Principal, Mr. Metson, was intsructed to arrange for the election of a parents’ representative. Congratulations were expressed to the Principal bv the Board on his . attaining ms fortieth year of service with the Education Department, it being stated that during that time he had not cost the Department a penny in relieving expenses, and had had less than a month on sick leave, lhe Principal reported that text bo were at an exorbitant price. In his opinion the Education Board had been found grossly wanting The roll unmber had increased to 172, 1« more than last year at the same St The following recommendations made by the Borough Council committees were agreed upon at.the Westport Borough Council meeting on Wednesday evening.—That all members of the Councils staff 65 years and over, be retired and given three months’ notice from March 31, 1945; services to terminate on June 30 1945 That a payment equal to two months’ wages or salary be made to the first five members! ot the staff, as scheduled on the list submitted. That a farewell social be tendered the retiring members at the Elite Tearooms on Saturday, June 30, ana that the Mayor make all necessary arrangements, invitations to be issued to the Councillors and all members of the staff. That; it be the policy of the Council to retire all members of the staff , who are now between the ages of 55 and 60, at ba, and all those under 55 and new members joining the stetft t'o be retiied at 60 years of age. That the action ot the’ Town Clerk in appointing Mr. K. Smith to the position of StoremanSalesman be approved, and tnat i service is satisfactory the appointment be made permanent. I hat tne offer of Mr. L. Cunningham to supply a public address system complete with microphone, speakers and speaker flares, also electric pick 7 up be accepted and that the equipment .roe purchased bv the Electric Department and be placed under the control of the Electrical Engineer, flhat the Hotel Buller Ltd. be informed that the Council regrets its inability to make any reduction in the charge for electric power to the hotel, owing to the generating costs, but tnat ii Government power comes to the d strict, a revision of charges may be possible. That the line be extended to Mr. C. T. Bruning’s residence providing he is prepared to pay all costs over and above the amount or i2u which represents an approximate extension of eight chains, the total cost being £BO, which can be reduced by the applicant assisting in the erection of the line. The minimum charge for current to be 13s 4d per month. That current be extended to the O’C'onor Institute, and Mr. r. J. Skilton on the same conditions as above, the total cost in this case being £l2O. That the charge for line work for Mr. J. Butterworth s extension be £25, the Council to reserve the right to supply other consumers from the line. That the request of the Buller County Council be acceded to regarding a conference of local authorities to discuss the question of establishing a Power Board and that the line 'of action to be taken by the Council be discussed by the Finance Committee at the special meeting to be held on the 26th. instant, also that Tuesday. March 27. be suggested to the Buller County Council as a suitable date for the conference.
