I MONTHLY MEETING | The Mayor (Mr. F A. Kitchingi ham) presided over Thursday even--1 Ing's meting of the Greymouth Borough Council. Also present were Councillors J. E. Stokes, H. Hutcmson, W. H. Herring, A. L. McKay. J. B. Kent, and F. F. Eoustndge. Mr. W. Hughes manager of the abbatoir, forwarded an extract from the gazette regarding compulsory I weighing and marking of meat. I line Municipal Association forwarded a cost sharing s agreement I with the Post apd Telegraph De- , partment. It was decided to seal the 1 agreement.
A-rising from the resignation of Mr. C. Garner from the position of caretaker of the Municipal building, the general committee was asked to revise the conditions for the employment of a caretaker and to report to the Council before applications were called. Consent was given to plans for the shifting of the line of Fitzgerald Street in the State housing settlement, Cobden.
It was decided to make a donation of £lO to the Greymouth Plunket Society. ,
A letter from the Rev. T. G. Campbell writing to the Mayor and Mayoress and Councillors to attend the opening celebrations of the 75th anniversary of St. John’s Presbyterian Church on March 10, and from the Blaketown School committee inviting them to attend the opening of the learners’ swimming bath on February 24 were received'. WORKS COMMITTE’S REPORT The Works committee reported on matters referred to it as follows: —- (1) That the Council accept the resignation tendered by Mr. P. Sinclair and that the Borough Engineer be authorised to fill the position by tihe appointment of a member of the staff. (2) That in response to requests made by the Blaketown-Preston Road Ratepayers’ Association the area of land on the south western side of Flower Street be prepared as a playground; that the approaches to Erua Moana Bridge be repaired; and that Westland Laundry Ltd. be required to abate the smoke nuisance occasioned by their works. (3) That the application for tar sealing the front of the Gospel Hall, Cardwell Street, be acceded to. the work to include the footpath between Bright and Fox Streets. (4) That the Council approve of the exemption of that portion of Paroa Road fronting Section 1844 from the provisions of Section 128 of the Public Works Act 1928.
(5) That the Borough Engineer be authorised to proceed with the iormation of Fitzgerald Street as soon as a bulldozer may be available after the Housing Department may have completed arrangements to enter upon the land. (6) That the purchase of a used garage air compressor set from Messrs Brown, Walters, and Co. Ltd., be approved at £65. (7) That, subject io removal at the pleasure of the Council and at the usual rental of £1 per annum, Mr. W. R. Hall be permitted to erect a motor garage on Ashmore Avenue in front of his residence. The report was adopted. TOWN PLANNING COMMITTEE Recommendations of the Town Planning Committee which were adopted were: — (1) That the Borough Engineer discuss with the Harbour Board Engineer the matter of’ the reclamation of low lying areas on the Cobden side! of the Grey River in conjunction with harbour works. ■ (2) That .Mr. F. G. Wilkins be advised that the use as a workshop of the building on Pt. Lot 22, Pt. Section 1978. Block 23, Marlborough Street, will not be permitted. That approval be given to the ap; plication on behalf of Messrs Betel's Shoes Ltd. for permission to esta b*. lish a clothing factory on Section 192 Q, Block 36, Tainui Street.
