N.Z. 1945 GRAIN CROPS

P.A.- WELLINGTON, February 14. The following estimated average yields per acre of wheat, oats, and barley for Seasons 1944-45 are published in the Gazette to-night, with the actual average yields for last season in parenthesis:— Wheat 37 (30.83) bushels; oats 49 (46.26) bushels; barley 40 (29.49 bushels. In accordance with the above estimates, the total yield of wheat should be approximately six million eight hundred thousand bushels, compared with a yield of 7,208,485 bushels lor last season. The total yield of grain from oats is expected Io be approximately two million four hundred thousand bushels, compared with a yield of 1,834,310 bushels for last year. The total yield of grain from barley is estimated at approximately 1,430,000 bushels, compared with 832,783 bushels for last season. In both cases, it is assumed that ’the same proportion of oats mid barley will be threshed this year as last. WORLD’S FOOD SHORTAGE (Rec. 9.30) MELBOURNE, Feb. 15Britain’s meagre butter ration of two 'ounces per head per week was assured for Christmas by the arrival of two ships from New Zealand “in the nick of time,” said Mr Banices Amery, leader of the United Kingdom Food Mission to Australia- and New Zealand. Mr Amery has just returned after a visit to Britain and the United States. He described the world food situation as “becoming more grave every month.” This trend was attributed largely to the urgent need of supplying food to bomb-dis-tressed Britain, -and to the liberated and devastated countries of Belgium, Holland, France, Greece and parts of Italy.
