WESTPORT NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent]. WESTPORT, February 14

The Kaitoa, due to-day from Nelson, is to load for Motueka. The Wingatui is due to-morrow from Wellington, and loads coal for tnat port. The Te Aroha is now due from Wellington, and the Karepo on Saturday, th e latter to load coal for Auckland. Mr J. Kilmartin left yesterday for Wellington. The Rev. S. Corney returned from Nelson y.esterday. Mr and Mrs H. Smith, Denniston, returned yesterday from Auckland. Mr and Mrs S. Jenkins returned yesterday from Auckland. Mr H. Hopkins returned yesterday afternoon from a visit to the North Island.

Hon. W. H. Mclntyre returned from Wellington yesterday. Miss S. Richards, of the Railway staff, Invercargill, is visiting Mrs G. Rodger, Russell Street. Messrs R. J’. Beattie, P. R. Angus, and W. Robertson, of the Head Office, N.Z. Railways, are due this evening on Departmental business. Phillis Lemon, Barry Samuel and Clifton Jackson, pupils of the Westport Technical High School, passed the 1944 Matriculation examination and the engineering preliminary. During the four weeks ended February 3, coal railed through from Westport to the East. Coast totalled 2318 tons, compared with 751 tons for the corresponding period in 1944, and 15,135 tons for the four weeks ended January 6. There were 1021 passenger tickets issued at Westport Railway Station last week, the revenue being £257. During the same period 56 pigs, 3000 feet of timber, and 736 tons of goods, including 6,60 tons of Charleston coal, were railed to the East Coast. Buller National Savings Idst week were: Westport £74 5s (quota £255): Denniston' 10s (£32); Granity-Miller-ton £254 7s (£50); Karamea — (£l3).
