[Our Own Correspondent]. HOKITIKA, February 7. Dr. Nixon ha's been appointed Medical Officer for South Westland district, extending from Mt. Bonar, below Ross, down to Jackson Bay, and will shortly, take >up residence al Wataroa.’ He will be in the employ of the Health Department. A petition is being circulated here and in Ross and Kumara- and the county for the Government to have cancelled the projected calling up. of Dr. E. J. Velvin, now in practice in Hokitika and at thc Hospital. The Gael is due from Wellington on Friday and on discharging general cargo is to load for Okuru and Jackson Bay. New parts for her engines are expected from overseas next month, and the vessel will probably; go for annual overhaul for the parts to be installed. Mr Hunt has signed on the vessel as cook. A bye-law making obligatory the numbering of houses has come into force in Hokitika, and residents are now complying with it in accordance with directions.
