SHIP WORKERS PROTEST

AT PORT CHALMERS DUNEDIN, Feb. 4. About 350 men engaged in ship repair and ship building work at Port Chalmers refused to work on Saturday morning. This action was taken as a protest against differentiation in conditions of employment, some of the men receiving ordinery time, and other time and a-half for Saturday mornings,. The matter has been under negotiation for some time, and it was thought, the authorities in Wellington would have announced a decision on Friday. The men at Port Chalmers held a lunch time meeting on Friday, to consider their demands that a 40-hour week should apply to all men engaged on shin work, and they decided not to work on Saturday morning, but to resume to-morrow morning. Several shins are under repair, and the urgency of the work is indicated bythe fact, that men have been work-' mg overtime up to three nights weekly.
