N.S.W. MINES

SYDNEY, Nov. 29 The Sydney “Herald” says: “A note of alarm has been sounded throughout the nation by figures of declining coal production. The fact has to be faced that the nation, m other respects geared for total war. is threatened with a closing-down of essential industries and with widespread unemployment, more civilian shortages, aggravated hardships and totally unnecessary prolongation of the war. Such a man-made industrial depression, coming in the midst of a bloody struggle against enemies of the white, race, would be a monstrous confession of _ futility which none contemplate without protest. The Federal Government in spite of frantic appeals, has been unable to stop it. Only the people, roused to the danger and incensed to a point of desperation, can stop it. If the miners continue not to pull their weight with the rest of the Australian people, only an outraged public opinion can avert a disaster of shameful dimensions.”
