WHEAT PRICE RISE For Canterbury Acreage Increase > P.A. CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 30. The Directors and the Electoral Committee of United Wheatgrowers (N.Z.) Limited met the Chairman of the Economic Stabilisation Commission, Mr. B. C. Ashwin, and the Director of Stabilisation, Mr. L. C. Webb, in Christchurch to-day, for a discussion to finalise the wheat price for 1946. The chair was occupied by Mr. H. F. Nicoll. Mr. Ashwin gave a comprehensive report on the Stabilisation Commission’s approach to the subject. He said that it was the decision of the Government that no increased price should be given for wheat without a corresponding increase in the production, and he was, therefore, authorised to discuss the matter on the basis of an acreage bonus system. After hearing Mr. Ashwin, and after fullv discussing all aspects of the question, and having regard to all of the circumstances, the Electoral Committee agreed to accept the decision of the Government to pay for wheat on a basis as follows: Six shillings and sixpence per bushel for tuscan, March basis, for a basic area of 200,000 acres; with progressive increases, these raising the price to 7s Id per bushel for 250.000 acres or more. The following resolution was earned unanimously: “That this Electoral Committee of the United .Wheatgrowers accept the proposed scale of oayments; and that the members agree to do their utmost to increase the area under wheat to the greatest extent possible in the endeavour to meet the nat’onal emergency.”
