DR. EVATT PROMISES PUNISHMENT (Rec. 9.30) CANBERRA, Nov. 30 Australia is determined that Japanese tvar,criminals will shoulder the responsibility for their crimes. Giving this assurance in the House of Representatives to-day the Minister of External Affairs (Dr. Evatt) said: “The Australian Government is determined that nothing that can be done to punish those responsible for ■brutality and cruelty will b e left undone. Suffering and idignities imposed on our soldiers cannot be condoned.” Dr. Evatt was presenting a report by Sir William Webb, Chier Justice of Queensland, who was appointed a special commissioner to inquire into Japanese atrocities in New Guinea and elsewhere. The Minister said that there was evidence that the Japanese had massacred, tortured and maltreated Australian* military and civilian personnel as well as natives in New Guinea.
