Four sittings of the Armed Forces Appeal Board have been arranged for Westland next month. They are as follows: Reefton, Wednesday, December 6, 10.30 a.m.; Westport, Thursday, December' 7, 10 a.m.; Greymouth, Wednesday;. December 13, 10.30 a.m.; Hokitika, Thursday, December 14, 2 p.m.
It was announced last night by the Minister of Defence, Hon. F. Jones that all army personnel who can be spared at 'Christmas will be grantee: leave to enable them to visit, their himes. This arrangement will apply particularly to members of reinforcements of the Second N.Z.E.F. who are at present in camp.—P.A.

A case of clothing for the people of Greece is to be despatched by the Grey Branch of the Lady Galway Guild next week. These articles are urgently required as the Grecian winter has already commenced, and parcels may be forwarded, ready for packing, to the Patriotic Depot or the Singer Sewing Machine premises, Mawhere Quay,
The s.s. Kaimiro sailed last evening with coal for the North Island. The s.s. Holmlea arrived yesterday and mav sail to-day with coal for New Plymouth. The s.s. Poolta is expected to-night to load coal for Nanier. The m.v. Karu is due to sail to-day with timber for Wellington. The s.s. Gabriella is loading timber for Wellington.
Last week, 232 towns attained their quotas of National Wav Savings. Seventeen of the principal centres reached their objeectives. and in each of the eighteen postal districts, the full district quota was secured. Full individual quotas were obtained by all towns in the Greymouth, Oamaru, Timaru and Westport districts. Since the close of the Victory Loan an appreciable number of towns, has been added to the list attaining their full annual quotas oi National V/ar Savings.—P.A. To discuss with the Mayor, Mr F. A. Kitchingham, preliminary steps in connection with a regional conference to be held early next year, Mr J. W. Mawson, planning officer for the Organisation for National Development, will visit Greymouth on December 12, in the course of a South Island tour. The proposed conference will be attended by, representatives of all local bodies and other interested organisations in the West Coast region, which extends from Kahurangi Point (Buller) in the north, to Big Bay (South Westland) in the south.
Advice has been received by the Patriotic Fund Board from Colonel Waite that a block of six houses has been obtained as a leave centre for New Zealand personnel in London, states a Wellington Press Association message. They are in Lowndes Square, Knightsbridge, close to Hyde Park corner, and will provide beds and other amenities for New Zealand repatriated prisoners of war visiting London and other New Zealand personnel on leave there. Col. Waite says they are good houses and accommodate 150 beds. k
Burns to the face, head and neck, received when a tar-spraying machine exploded at Kumara yesterday morning, necessitated the admission to the Grey River Hospital of a Public Works Department employee, Thomas 'Burt, aged 41 years, married of Tainui Street, Greymouth. Another workman, I. Tainui, also received burns to his hands* being treated at the Westland Hospital. The condition of both men is satisfactory. The explosion occurred while the machine was being loaded from kettles in Which the tar had been heated, and was caused by the lar hitting the hot plate in the spray. All inflammable parts of the machine were destroyed and the tyres 'of a tractor were also burned.

A handsome Challenge Cup .has been donated by Mr. P. Higgins, ot Cobden, for the best decorated motor vehicle in th e procession for the summer show of the Cobden Home ana School Association at the school grounds, on Saturday. The trophy will be on display to-day and tomorrow at Gilbert Bros, jewellers. Considerable interest is being taken in the procession and a number ot firms have already promised to enter decorated lorries or cars.
