FIRST RAID ALERT
FOR N.2. ARRIVALS AT PACIFIC BASE. JAPS ATTACK IN~THEIR AREA. WELLINGTON, November 24. (R.N.Z.A.F. Official News Service). SOUTH-WEST PACIFIC, Nov. 23. Many New Zealanders now in the Pacific experienced their first air raid alert recently. These men are members of service units that have been sent to an advanced base soon to be taken over by an R.N.Z.A.F. task force. Some of them left New Zealand only a little more than six weeks ago. The alert was sounded just after dark, and, with the warning that enemy aircraft were in the vicinity, there was an instantaneous black-out. Subsequent reports showed that enemy raiders struck at an Allied base in the area, causing slight damage, and wounding a few men. Fighters took off in pursuit of the enemy, and drove them away. No New Zealand personnel were involved in the actual attack, but they gained some valuable experience through the first alert.
