RAILWAYS v. SHIPS

Competition in N.Z. INQUIRY TO BE HELD. P.A. WELLINGTON, November 9. The appointment of a Committee to investigate the question sof competition between the Railways and coastal shipping was announced today by the Minister of Transpoit, Hon. J. O’Brien. The Committee has been appointed under Section 11 of the Transport Licensing Amendment Act, 1936, stated the Minister, and its order of reference is: To make enquiries, generally, regarding the competition between railways and coastal shipping, and the desirability, in the national interest, of controlling such competition; and the methods to be adopted for such control. The personnel of the Committee is as follows: Mr H. B. Smith, Assistant Commissioner of Transport (chairman); Mr H. C. Langford, Commercial Manager of the* N.Z. Government Railways; and Captain S. Holm; N.Z. Shipowners’ Federation The Committee will hold public sittings, and it will be commencing in the near future.
