GREY HARBOUR BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING Mr J. Mulcare presided over Wednesday evening’s monthly meeting of the Greymouth Harbour Board. Also present were Messrs F. Williams, J. Ry.all, W. E. J. Steer, E. W. Heenan, M. Wallace and W. Clayton; also the acting-secretary (Mr R. Steel) and the engineer (Mr D. S. Kennedy). The acting-secretary, Marine Department, wrote enquiring if use could be made of the tug “Kumea” for sounding in the vicinity of the proposed F'oint Elizabeth harbour and enquiring the charge per day. It was decided to make the tug available for the work.

The Department of Labour forwarded summonses issued against • the Board for overtime for wharf- , hands and signalmen for work done on statutary holidays. The amount claimed was £6B 15s sd. The secretary reported that a ■ notice to defend had been filed on November 7. The Department also advised that a plaint claiming £4O penalties from the Board for non-payment of overtime to wharfhands and signalmen would be brought on for hearing on December 4 next. The matters were referred to Messrs Hannan and Seddon. Amalgamated Wireless (Aust.) Ltd. advised that new projection Loxes for the echometer in place of defective boxes could be supplied at a cost, of about £lOO. The matter was held over. The engineer said that a fault had been discovered which apparently was quite new in the experience of the manufacturers of the echometer. The trouble with the echometer had not been the fault of the board's staff. Alluvial Mining Equipment . Ltd. advised that they were arranging to prepare designs of a cast manganese, steel bucket together with bucket I links for the dredge. The Town Clerk, Christchurch, advised that the second annual conference of the South Island Local Bodies’ Associaiton would be held m Timaru on November 15 and 16. It was decided that Mr _ Wallace should represent the Board if he attended the conference. ± a It was decided to pay .accumulated leave to an employee of the Board who had been serving in the Navy. Tenders for the construction of 638 lineal feet of 14ft. concrete piles for] the lagoon bridge were received, but it was"decided to advise that in view of the uncertainty regarding future harbour works no tender could at present be accepted. Consent was granted to the tollowing transfers: N.W.i, Lot 1. Sec. 1, Res. 1485, Blaketown, T. S. WHIJ to K. Scott; Sec. 137, Res. 1427, Blaketown, B. Sutherland and others to D Barron; Sec. 409, Dobson. Robt. Marshall to Isabella Marshall. . The 'District Public Trustee advised that the sale of Section estate of T. Moriarty to C. Shirley, had been rescinded. The Treasury Department remitted wharfages, general £212 17s 6-d; wharfages State coal. August account, £B2O 5s 4d; September account £945 4s 8d; Railway Department, rent 10s. . The Finance Committee repoited that receipts since the last meeting had totalled £2373 10s lid, made up as follows: Shipping dues £268 10s lid, rents £B2 Ss sd, hire and sale of plant £lO 1.5 s 6d, accident compensation £2B 8s 7d, wharfages £l9<B 7s 6d, deposit on hire of Plant L 3. The Harbour Fund had a ciebit balance of £7540 16s 3d, The payment of accounts amounting to uw 11s id was recommended. The report was adopted.
