POLISH ISSUE
MOSCOW MEETING Settlement Possible [Aust. & N.Z. Press Association] (R-ec. 12.20.) LONDON, October 11. Polish circles ’ here state that the Prime Minister- of Poland, M. Mikolajczyk, has accepted an invitation to visit Moscow in talks between Mr. Churchill and M. Stalin. This news is regarded, as being of the utmost importance, as holding possibilities of a settlement of - the Polish question and the problem of Russo-Pol-ish relations. The President of the Polish Council, also the Foreign Minister, and other members of the Government, are accompanying the Prime Minister, who is leaving as soon as possible. Mr Churchill’s visit coincides with an important statement in the Russian press expressing flat opposition to altering th e principle of the unanimous vote by the four major Allied Powers on the International Security Council, in the case of aggression. On Monday night Mr Churchill had three hours talk with M. Stalin. On Tuesday he conferred with his diplomatic and military staff, before his second meeting with M. Stalin. Mr Harriman, who is acting as Mr Roosevelt’s personal representative, _ was not present at the Kremlin, but is being kept fully informed by the British delegation. The latest indications are that Mr Churchill’s visit will last ■throughout this week. - - M. Stalin spoke at a luncheon to Mr Churchill. He paid a generous tribute to the British and American war effort. He also emphasised the importance of post-war co-operation and collaboration. He said that peace-loving nations were caught unawares and unprepared when the present war broke out. This must not occur again.
