PEACE JAMBOREE
MR. CURTIN CRITICAL OF AUSTRALIAN - PREPARATIONS (Rec. 9.30) CANBERRA, Sept. 20 Condemning complacent preparations for a peace celebration when Germany surrenders. Mr. Curtin declared to-day that he . would not share any holiday feeling. “It is truly wrong to believe "that the strain of war will cease when Germany is defeated,” he said. “We shall still have a task of bringing total war to conclusion and must fight with concentration and intensity against Japan. The fact that Germany has surrendered will mean that Allied strength in the Pacific will be greater than ever. This will impose stesses on our -economic structure even greater than hitherto. I shall feel a sense of relieve when Germany surrenders but I shall have no holiday feeling, for each day lost means a day gained to Japan.” In Sydney, the transport officers, police and military authorities have
conferred on plans to cope with arm-? istice demonstrations. Only ambulances and fire brigades will be allowed in city streets in the event of a sudden declaration of peace. Stores will close, and it is likely that the theatres, and hotels will also be shut.
