CROSSING FATALITY

GREYMOUTH WOMAN VICTIM. ASHBURTON, September 18. A crossing smash in the borough, this morning, resulted in the death of Mrs Esme Preddy, whose husband, L'.eut. W. J. Preddy, is on active service overseas. Her mother, Mrs Ingram, was seriously injured and d:ea later in hospital. A rake .of trucks obscured the view, the engine of a goods train striking the car square on and carrying it over the business block. Mrs Preddy lived in Greymouth from 1939 until a few months ago, when, following a period of nursing service at Greymouth and Hokitika, she took up work as a nurse at Ashburton, where her parents live. Her husband, Lieut. W. J. Preddy 1 , who is a member of the staff of the Union Bank, entered the Armed Forces in September, 1940, from Greymouth, and for some time has been serving in the Medical Corps in the Pacific theatre. Mrs Preddy was aged 37, and had no children.
