BURMA CAMPAIGN

HEAVY FIGHTING IN NAYU RANGE (Rec. 1.10) KANDY, Sept. 11. A South-east Asia communique reports that heavy fighting is in progress for a strategic ridge held by Japanese in the Nayu Range, southwest of Buthidaung. Enemy losses in a three days’ battle have been substantial. More progress has been made on the Tiddim Road, where the enemy is falling back on strong defences. Long-range R.A.F. fighters on Sunday made further successful attacks on shipping off the Tenasserim coast. They left six enemy cargo vessels and one gunboat beached south-east of Kaegauk, and in, a later strike cargo vessels and a gunboat were severely strafed and damaged.
