KUMARA NOTES
(Our Own Correspondent) . Miss Carol Rollo has gone to spena the school vacation with her ieia tives in Christchurch. . Miss Mary McEnaney is a patien in the Grey River Hospital. Miss Rachael Hunt, who has been here on a holiday visit to relatives, has returned to Christchurch. Mr. McCaw of Christchurch is on a visit to Mr..and Mrs. M. Fahej, Beach Road. f Miss Margaret Burger, a former well-known resident, has been spend-, ing a holiday with friends at Dillmanstown. , Mr. and Mrs. C. Thorn and family have left to reside in Kumara. Mr. A. J. S. Fensom of Chnstchurcn is visiting friends in Kumara. Flying Officer Robert Watson is visiting his aunt, Miss J. G. Watson, Dillmanstown. There is at present quite a number of sickness cases here, mostly pneumonia and pleurisy. Doctors at Hokitika have had several calls to Kumara.
Mrs. J. Hunter presided over a good attendance of the Women’s Institute at the monthly meeting. An apology for absence was received from Mrs. Lakin. Four new members were welcomed, Mesdames Burridge, Ryan, Ollerenshaw and Lawson. Arrangements were made for the Federation meeting to be held here in October, also the Institute’s eleventh birthday, at Trinity Hall on September 7, at 7.30 p.m. Mrs. Malcolmson continued the golden thread talk. Knitting handed in for the Navy included four balaclavas, four pairs of mittens, and one pullover; while 26 peggy squares were handed in to complete a 4uilt. A demonstration in seWing on collars was given by Miss A. Caithness. Mrs. Lorrimer won a mystery parcel donated by Mrs. E. Watson. Competitions resulted: Girdle Scones, Mrs. Birss 1; Mrs. Evenden 2; Mrs. Frew 3. Bloom: Mrs. Birss 1; Mrs. Evenden 2; Mrs. Stratford 3. Mrs. Evenden won the social competition. Dressmaking classes were arranged for next month. Mr. L. J. Thwaites, Headmaster of the local school, who is retiring for health reasons, was on Friday farewelled as the school began the holidays. A senior pupil, Miss Vivian Case, said the scholars regretted the retirement of their headmaster, and on their behalf asked him to accept a leather writing kit and asked Mrs. Thwaites to accept a chromium fireside companion as a token of the regard of all the pupils. Miss Roll (Infant Mistress) presented Mr. Thwaites with a volume “Keys of the Kingdom” from the infant room. Mr. and Mrs. Thwaites both expressed gratitude to the pupils and wished them all prosperity and every happiness. Items were given as follows: Song, Verdun Ritchie; song and chorus, Marion Case and scholars; vocal duet, Pauline Laurence and Vivian Case; folk song, Patricia McIntosh and Valerie Becker; vocal duet, Ray Landrebe and Neil Neville.
