TAX-DODGING PROPOSAL (Rec. 5.5) OTTAWA, Aug. 15.. The .Prime Minister, Mr Mackenzie King, announced in the House of Commons that he will support any move in the next Parliament to make the salaries of members free of tax. He said: “I regard their salary as something that is provided to secure the independence of Members of Parliament. If any part of their salary is taken away in taxation, there is less assurance of their independence. He said he felt that no change should be made in the present Parliament, but as the general election approached, he was concerned about the 'independence of members and about the calibre of Parliamentary representations. The House was in danger of losing some of the ablest and most experienced

members because they would not be candidates since they could not afford to do so. T'he Canadian Press s.ays: P’resent taxation cuts the salary of four thousand dollars for each member to about twenty-eight hundred dollars.
