HOKITIKA NOTES
[Our Own Correspondent!. HOKITIKA, August 16. The death occurred at his home, south Revell Street, early this morning of Mr. John Growcott. A son of Mrs. Growcott, and the late Enoch Growcott, of Rimu, of which township he was a native, he came to Hokitika to reside some years ago, but had been in indifferent health lor a long time, and only returned last week from Christchurch after receiving medical treatment. He leaves a wife and two young sons. Mr. F. Ballinger occupied the chair at the annual meeting of the Hokitika Bowling Club. The following officers were elected: President, J. B. Watson; Vice-President, A. H. Walters; Secretary. J. Conning; Assistant-Secret-ary, W. Burne; Committee, Messrs Ballinger, McKeon, Harper and Spiers Ground Committee, Messrs Walters, Fraser and Stevenson; Match Committee, Messrs Breeze, Coxhill ana McKeon; Delegate to Union, Mr. Ballinger; Auditor, Mr. Brown. Mr. Stevenson prepared an honours board for the singles championship; Mr. McKeon presented an honours board for the pairs and rinks winners. Mr. Burne, the winner, was presented with Mr. Spier’s silver cup, and Mr. McKeon with the Duncan Cup, the chairman congratulating the winners. Mr. M. B. James presented a silver cup, and it was decided to draw up the rules to govern this competition. Votes of appreciation to all who assisted the club were recorded, the ladies m particular, Mrs. Fraser being singled out for special mention for her assistance in providing afternoon tea. The resignation of Mr. H. F. Cooke was received with regret, and a tribute paid to his sportsmanship. It was decided to have the clud incorporated. Messrs W. M. Fraser, Walters and Watson were empowered to have.the club’s titles cleared. Tne balance-sheet disclosed a -credit of £9B 14s Id.
At the Hokitika School Committee meeting, Messrs Armstrong, Teller, Hadfield and Salvingy were deputed to wait on the Hon. J. O’Brien to urge that a new school building be erected. The committee instructed the secretary to convey to Mr. A. H. Lawn congratulations on his election to tne Canterbury Education Board. 'Hie Rector reported that the primary roll stood at 302 and the secondary roll at 101. Attendance had been affected by influenza and severe colds, the average for the past two weeks being 77 per cent. The school fair would be held on August 16. School Rugby and basketball teams would visit Rangiora at the week-end. The school third grade team won the local football competitiin. The school closes on Fridav for the vacation:
