(Our Own Correspondent]. • . HOKITIKA, July 27. Rain delayed the unloading here of the Gael's cement cargo. She will sail for Wellington with timber on Friday. The launch belonging to the Public Works Department took eight hours longer to go from Greymouth to Jackson Bay, but behaved well in adverse conditions.

Fines of 10s each with costs were imposed 1 by Mr. G. G. Chisholm, S.M., on the following: R .P. Roberts, G. Nillson, and A. S. Faye (for cycling at night without lights); G. Knapp (unlicensed radio set), G. P. Rea (wandering stock at Ross). At the Warden’s Court, the following applications were granted: — T. J. O’Connor, residence site, Rimu; E. A. and L. Mackley, prospecting licenses; Maori Gold Dredging Coy., prospecting license; A. W. Purcell, special beach claims. * Mr. A. H. Lawn secured 242 votes in the election as a representative of the West Coast and North Canterbury on the Canterbury Education Board, the sitting member Mr. McNeil, 135 votes, and Rev. K. Hadfield (member of the Hokitika School Committee) 59 votes. Mr. Lawn is Chairman of the local National Savings Committee, a member of the local Loan Committee, and of the Westland Hospital Board and a Trustee of the local Savings Bank. A meeting was held yesteiday to consider the Government proposal to place the Fire Brigade under municipal control, there being present Messrs T. W. Duff (Chair), RD. Bowman, W. E. Olds and H. C. Peart (representing the Fire Board), A. K. Elcock (Mayor), L. S. Ross and A C. Armstrong (Borough Council) and L. L. Ross (Brigade Superintendent). After discussion, it was decided .to advise the Fire Boards’ Association that it was decided to retain a Fire Board here. .
