four Own Correspondent]. Her friends will be pleased to learn that the condition of Mrs. S.mpsou. who is an inmate of Grey Hospital, is improving. Mr. and Mrs. A. Stephens and family of Christchurch, have arrived, to take up residence here. Mr. Stephens has started work in the Roa Mine. Private R. Carswell arrives to-night from Hanmer, where he has been undergoing treatment. Mrs. M. Walker of Papanui haz been visiting here, as the guest or Mrs. BuchananMrs. J. Gilmer of Christchurch, who has been visiting her relatives, has returned home. The funeral of Mr. Ernest G. Schafer took place to Karoro Cemetery on Wednesday. There was a large attendance. The service of the Cnurcn of England at the home and at tne graveside was conducted by Rev. C. J Q. Scariffe, of Ahaura, and a Masonic burial service was read by Mr. D. MeI Ivor, Brunner. The pall-bearers were Messrs T. Turner, J. Neilson, J. Burr and T. Maguigan, past-master of tne Lodge. There w r ere many floral tributes, while over 100 telegrams and messages of sympathy were received. The late Mr. Schafer was identified with Blackball for over 30 years, ana was stationary engine driver at tne Blackball Mine for very many years. Pie was a staunch trade unionist, a hie long supporter of the Labour Party, was widely read and had a good gi ip of international affairs, in yvhich he always expressed a keen interest. A native of Hanover, he came to the British Colonies as a.young man, ar. like many of his countrymen, made a first-class settler. He had a fair knowledge of the plumbing art, ana many a tank, in the village was tne work of deceased. He was of a kindiv and obliging nature, and will be missed by the community, whose sympathy is extended to the relatives. Privates J. McMaster and G. Walker were tendered a social by the Soldiers’ Welfare Committee in the Oda fellows’ Hall. The music for the even-, ing was supplied by Mrs. J. Bateman (piano), and Mr. A. Grindle (cornet) while Messrs T. Philip and J. Bateman acter as M’s.C. Mr. J. Bateman presented each guest with an envelope containmg notes and expressed tne pleasure of all present at their sate . return, wishing them all the best. The recipients suitably replied. The local Post Office staff and th? Blackball subscribers have been congratulated by the State on having achieved their National Savings quota for the year. A certificate of the fact is displayed in the Post Office windoty. I am informed that this week’s quota will be increased.
