AMERICAN AIR FORCE CLEARS OUT. LONDON, June 29.
Henyang is in flames. The United States Air Force has abandoned its airfield at Hengyang, The Americans dropped _ 100-lb bombs on the field to render it useless to the enemy. The American Air Force supporting the Chinese ground froces attached to Chuchow and Siangsiang, destroyed military installations in enemy strongholds at Anjen, Yuhsieii and Pingsiang. Large fires were start•ed at Kweiyi, near Lake Tungting, also at Mokiakiao, north-east of Hengyang.
HENGYANG STILL HOLDS OUT. (Rec. 11.15) LONDON, June 29. A Chinese communique from Chungking stated: Hengyang is holding out in spite of heavily increased Japanese attacks. A United Press correspondent at Chungking says: The Chinese are desperately attempting to retrieve the Honan situation. They launched strong diversionary attacks behind the Japanese, recaptured Pingsiang, and reached the outskirts of Siangsiang. The Chiriese offensive is steadily developing. The Central News reports; “Japanese are again using poison gasses.”
