NARROW ESCAPE
BUS FALLS 40 FEET. DUNEDIN, June 21. A railway bus, which left the city for Port Chalmers about 11 p.m. yesterday, somersaulted over a steep bank near Burke’s, six of the 26 passengers being sent to hospital with more or less serious injuries, which were, however, miraculously light, considering the fact that the bus was badly smashed by a fall of 40 feet. The passengers’ and the driver’s accounts concur that just before the accident the bus lights fused, causing the driver to lose his sight of the road at a curve. The injured are: George McAlister (Dunedin), the driver, facial injuries; Mrs. Edith Morrison, concussion; Thomas Braid, facial injuries; Mrs. Thomas Braid, fractured kneecap (the last-mentioned three of Fort Chalmers); Miss Agnes Robb (St. Leonards), abdominal injuries; and Mrs. Helen Meredith (St. Leonards), a fractured arm. Many other passengers were badly shaken. They were attended to at Mr. C. J. Hayward’s residence at Burke’s.
