ADMIRAL HALSEY

GOING TO MID-PACIFIC. (Rec. 9.5.) WASHINGTON, May 20. A press report from GuadalcanalIsland, says: Admiral Halsey, in a message to his forces, declared the South Pacific campaign was virtually completed, except for mopping-up and starving out operations. He praised' his men for the pi ogress “from desperate days of Guadalcanal’ to the smooth steam-rolling of Bougainville and the easv seizure of Green and Emirau Islands.” The United Press Agency correspondent at Pearl Harbour says the message is unofficially interpreted as Admiral Halsey’s -farewell, preparatory to undertaking a new naval assignment. It is believed he is rejoining Admiral Nimitz to direct an offensive across the Central Pacific.
