To the Electors of the Southern Riding: T ADIES & GENTLEMEN: In offering myself .as a Candidate for the Southern Riding at 1 the forthcoming elections, I do not claim to have any special qualifications, excepting a sound knowledge of business and a good general understanding on the needs of the district under the jurisdiction of the Westland County Council. Having spent all my life in South Westland (my family were among the pioneers of Harihari), I can say with assurance that I know the difficulties and problems that confront the electors. Our climatic conditions are such that river erosion and reading maintenance are two of the bigger problems we have to contend with. With regard to the Catchment Board Scheme, I would support the attitude of the Farmers’ Union and the County in their refusal to join this, as I feel that, until such time as the Board gets into operation and proves that it is capable of permanently controlling South Westland, rivers, the County, with the use of bulldozers, is well able to temporarily confine them to their courses. I congratulate the present Councillors on their decision to purchase ,a Combination Bulldozer and Digger, and I will advocate the centralisation of all lorries for a certain period in each district to expedite the metalling of roads. I am a strong advocate of decentralisation of industries, and support .any scheme to bring about the setting up of secondary industries here; especially those using raw materials > produced in the district; i.e.. box ; manufacturing and plastic materials. If elected I give my solemn promise that I will carry out my duties . and obligations 'to the very best of , my ability. I am, respectfully yours, G. H H. ROBERTSON, . Harihari.
