tour Own Correspondent]. HOKITIKA, May 19. The borough roll totals 1785 names, and the Westland County roll 1610, made up as follows Southern Riding 777, Central Riding 445, Northern Riding. 393.. The Gael sailed to-day at 8 a.m. for Okuru with general cargo, she will return on Monday to load timber and general cargo for Wellington. At the annual meeting of the Red Cross Society the following officers were elected Patron, Mr. A. _R. Elcock; Chairman, Mr. F. D. Gillespie; Vice-President, Mr. H. W. Sweeney; Secretary ,Mrs. Z. Harrison; Treasurer, Mr. A. C. Armstrong; Committee Mesdames Reeves, Crough, Moore, Cooper, Walters, Ingram, Stevens, Whitford, Salvign v ami Patterson. Messrs R. Cooper, Stevens, and S. King .-Auditor, Mr. Salvigny. Mrs. Salvigny, was re appointed organiser for the junior Red Cross. Membership fee was fixed at 2s 6d and class fee at 2s 6d. Mrs. Reeves was appointed class supervisor. The balance sheet disclosed a profit of £49 6s 6d; £9O 10s 3d had been raised for the sick and wounded, and 58 15s was paid to headquarters. The total amount raised during the year

was £l7O. At the Hospital Board’s ordinary meeting there were present Messrs E. W. Heenan (chair), T. W. Duff, G. Heinz, S. Havill, J. Richards, J. Murdoch ,T. P. O’Neil, and W. Jamieson. Dr. D. A. Arnott was also present. It was notified that the bus from the hospital on Sundays would leave at 3.30 p.m. for Hokitika instead of four o’clock in future. Hon. J. O’Brien notified that the rail-car leaving Hokitika at 4.25 would stop at the Sea View station to pick up or set down passengers. It was resolved to forward a letter of thanks to Mr. O’Brien for making representations. The chairman expressed thanks to five members who were retiring, Messrs A. R. Elcock. J. A. Murdoch. D. F. E. Freitas, G. Heinz and S. Havill. It would mean new representation for the town. Mr. Duff said he was the oldest member, having been one of the. original trustees set up in 1910. In those days he used to cycle to the meetings from Stafford, a distance of 8 miles and return home after the meeting. The hospital was a wonderful institution, and with a grand staff. Dr. Arnott expressed thanks for the co-operation of the Board. He was sorry some of the members were not seeking reelection. However to be getting old was something that came to all. He wished the members retiring many happy years. The chairman reported that at a special meeting the Board had selected* Mr. J. S. McGilvary as engineer from 24 _ applicants. He held a first class British Board of Trade Marine certificate, and his references indicated him to be highly qualified. It was hoped he would commence duties on July 1. The laundry was being overhauled, a new floor being put down, and concrete foundations under the machinery. It would be necessary to appoint a man to take charge of the laundry, but it would be difficult to start the laundry until the new engineer arrived.
