A decision to take a referendum on the question of tne establishment o hotels in the suburbs, a hoily-debaiea subject in Invercargill at present, was made at a special meeting of ie City Council this afternoon, me referendum will be taken on May •*<> the date of the civic elections. , . The Council reached its decision after hearing a deputation from a committee set up at a meeting on Tuesday to prepare a case against any hotels in the suburbs. The deputation offered to meet the cost of ■taking a referendum, if the Cpuncu granted its request. . Councillor W. H. Boyes said that, as a member of the Trust, he would welcome a referendum. It would take the responsibility off the Trust. Councillor G. B. Orbell said he had voted against any liquor in the suburbs, but they were over-ruled at the meeting of the Trust. Doctor Orbell supported Cr nuyes. The Trust had been far from unanimous on this question, he said. He and Cr. Boyes were not in favour wn it. but. unfortunately, they were overruled. The Town Clerk, Mr. W. F. Sturman, said that, a referendum would have no legal effect. It could simply be used as evidence in the Supreme Court.
