BETTING BOOM
SYDNEY, Ma v 11. Evidence of the huge betting that is taking place at horse and greyhound meetings in New South Wales is obtained from figures for the tptalisator and bookmakers’ turnover. For nine months of the racing year, from 1/7/43 to 3/3/44, the totalisat.or turnover amounted to £4,648,340. This easily beats the previous record for the State for any full racing year. The bookmakers’ turnover of £22,773,200 for nine months is a record since the half per ’cent, tax on the turnover was imposed in 1940.
