(Our Own Corresponaent; HOKITIKA, May .10. . The boy Gordon Glass, of Harihari, who underwent an operation at the Westland Hospital,, as the result of a wound in the forehead from a pearifle bullet, is doing as well as can be expected, but his case remains serious; The bullet entered /the forehead on the side and passed through. The lad arrived home from Greymouth on Friday evening on his school holidays. It appears the rifle was in the garage. No particulars will be available until the lad regains consciousness and is able to give an account of how the accident happened. He W'as first attended to by Dr Corban of Wataroa, who after giving attention, brought him to the Westland Hospital, where Dr Logan, of Greymouth (who is acting locums for Dr Arnott) performed an immediate operation. The Businessmen’s Association has been advised by the Postmaster at Greymouth that a direct mail service between Hokitika and Kumara and vice versa will be reinstated as from Monday next. The mail from Kumara will be brought by rail-car, leaving Kumara at 11.40, and a return will be sent by the 4.35 p.m. train. The reinstatement of the service will be a boon to Kumara residents especially for the provision of medical supplies required from time to time from Hokitika chemists. At the Westland County Council’s monthly meeting there were , present Crs G. Rowley (chairman), I T. P. O’Neil, J. Donovan, N. Harris, W. Jamieson, R. Bradley and P. J. | McLean. Mr W. D. Nolan, of Okuru W'as present to advise on a number of requirements in the Okuru area. Matters that had been causing some discussion between the Council .and the District Engineer of Public Works, Mr Evans, were satisfactorily arranged in conference, and .Mr Evans was thanked for the decisions reached. He advised that it was not proposed to assist financially . with repairs to Peterson .Road, .as it was considered the Council could finance the work. The further representations of the Council would be referred to the head office. If a road was in danger the trouble at Greek’s Creek would be dealt with under the Public Works Act. It was suggested that the Council proceed under Section 67 of the Counties’ Act. It was decided to take no action on a letter received from the Orura County Council, in regard to primary production matters. A grant of £2O was made to improve road access for silver pine cutters at Kumara. Mr M. Sullivan, of Weheka, forwarded petition from sixty signatories asking; for extension of the railway into South Westland. It was decided to make further representations for this work to be proceeded with. Mr R. Trevathan was appointee temporary roadman at Wataroa. Hon. J. O’Brien notified that there was little prospect of securing d bulldozer for some time to come. The chairman stated that on his recent visit to Christchurch he had interviewed a firm with a view to the purchase of a bulldozer. The Council approved of the action ot the chairman, and decided to purchase the bulldozer immediately. Harihari Farmers’ Union wrote offering the full support of its members in regard to the stand taken by the Council for the formation of a catchment area. The Union also asked the Council to give consideration to the formation of a track from the K.D.V. mill to the sea beach. The overseer was instructed to prepare a report on this proposal. Accounts totalling £1512 ,6s lid were passed. On the suggestion of Cr Donovan it was decided to spend up to £2O on clearing the Okarito north beach road. On Cr O’Neil’s motion itj was decided to ask the Main Highways Board to undertake the sealing of the Kokatahi Road for a distance of six and a-half miles. The overseer was asked to interview the board on the matter.
