TEHERAN TIFFS

Churchill and Stalin ROOSEVELT’S HIT WITH RUSSIAN LEADER. (Rec. 11.40.) NEW YORK, May 10. The “Saturday Evening Post’’, inan article published six months after the conference at Teheran says: Mr. Churchill and M. Stalin had many blunt exchanges across the conference table, at Teheran, with Mr. Roosevelt always acting as a tactful peacemaker. Since the Teheran conference, Mr. Roosevelt and M. Stalin have carried on a most cordial personal correspondence, with! letters each way In their own handwriting, suplemented bv personal cables. Without any reservation. tne article declared “that the Teheran Conference was marked bv strong ‘asperities' between Mr. Churchill and M. Stalin.’’ M. Stalin’s edged wit, aimed at Mr. Churchill, was subsequently to affect the amenities between the Big Three. Mr. Churchill was easily nettled, and he replied in kind. It was Mr. Roosevelt’s self-ap-pointed task to moderate these asperities before thev drew blood.. Mr. .Roosevelt escaped these quarrels, ana it is noteworthy, although its political significance remains obscure, that M. Stalin, while freouentlv rawhiding Mr. Churchill, treated Mr. Roosevelt with consideration approaching to deference. The President clearly exhibited a tough-minded determination to enrol Russia as a sincere, willing collaborator in post-war settlements. M. Stalin volunteered to Mr. Roosevelt a sweeping declaration of his desire to conciliate his neighbours, saving flatly that he had no desire to own Europe. His countrv was only half populated, and Russians haa plenty to do at home. M. Stalin also gave Mr. Roosevelt personal assurances regarding Finland.
