CARPATHIAN FRONTS Both Air Forces Active [Aus. & N.Z- Press Assn.] LONDON, May 2. Reuter's Moscow correspondent states: The Germans on the sub-Car-pathian front also in Roumania and Moldavia are actively testing tne Russian lines. German reserves continue to arrive in the Stanislawow district’ where the enemy is carrying out local attacks, sometimes in regimental strength. The Russians without difficulty prevented the Germans gaining objectives, or otherwise improving positions. German reports say that fighting is going on around the Vitebsk-Polotsk area; also north of Jassy, and in northern White Russia. T'he Moscow correspondent of the British. United Press states the Germans are losing heavily in persistent attacks in the Jassy area Six hundred were Rjlled in the past 24 hours. Russian bombers are hitting against Brest Litovsk to disrupt the German supply lines behind the central front. Together with the repeated attacks against Lwow and against road and rail centres between, this may mean the Russians are plann-.ng a full-scale assault on this front.
A Russian air communique says: Russian long-range bombers, last night, without loss, mass-raided the railway junction at Lwow, hit a concentration of troop trains and caused fires and explosions. The Soviet communiques last night and to-night said that there had been no changes on any front. The German commentator, Von Olberg, stated that M. Stalin had deliberately halted the short-lived Russian offensive in -the i Lower Dniester and also the Jassv drea, in order to coincide a great drive from the east with the opening of the Western front.
The German News Agency’s commentator, Von Hammer, declared that hundreds of German bombers and fie-hter-bombers are ceaselessly attacking Russian troop movements and concentrations in the Jassy. He added that Russian infantry and tank concentrations massing south-west of Kowel are also being attacked by fleets of German ’planes.
