PETROL COUPON TRANSFER

AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION’S CONCERN.. P.A. CHRISTCHURCH, April 27. Concern at a report published in Wellington suggesting that it. was proposed to make petrol coupons irontransferable was expressed bi' the | committee of the Automob.le Asso- > nation (Canterbury) this evening, | and it was decided to inform the Gov- j ornment that members of the asso- i ciation would view such a change | with strong disfavour. Mr. W. R. j Carey commented that the associa- I tion looked with equal disfavour on ; holders of petrol licenses who were | trafficking in coupons illegally. | When the Welington report was j mentioned, Mr. R G. Twyneham , said the Government had tried three or four times to get convictions against persons concerned in the transfer of coupons. The suggestion now, apparently, was that new regulations should be gazetted. Mr. W. F. Harley said he had heard a rumour that coupons were to be made non-transferable in the next licensing period. Mr. Carey: There will be a hue and cry from one end of New Zealand to the other if they do that. The president (Mr. G. Hamilton): They won’t stop a man cashing his coupon and giving the petrol to someone else. Mr. Twyneham: It is illegal to give away petrol. The opinion that the change in the right-hand traffic rule, under which the position now was, that traffic on the right making a turn had to give way to traffic going straight through was not understood bv manv motorists, was expressed by Mr. F. W. Johnston. He said he thought that the rule should not have been altered, but that as it was, the change should have been, given better publicity and should have been enforced. Mr. Johnston said he had almost had six collisions in the last few. months with vehicles on his right making a turn but not giving way. The change in. the rule had never been properly enforced or advertised. The lawabiding man had to give way both times. The position was absurd and dangerous. Mr. W. R. Carev said it was probable that an explanatory memorandum would be issued at reelicensing time-
