The local branch of the Home Servicemen’s Association is now in a position to proceed with the incorporation of the branch. A meeting of all ex-home servicemen has been called for next Tuesday. There has been considerable delay in deciding on a design for a badge, but the difficulty has been overcome bv the Dominion Executive and badges have been put into production. They will be issued shortly to members who have already jo'ned. The object of the Association is to assist less fortunate members financially or otherwise.

Mrs. R. Donaldson presided over a fair attendance at the annual meeting of the Ngahere Women’s Institute held at the residence of Mrs. Armstrong. The following officers were elected: President, Mrs. Burr; Vice-President, Mrs. Richardson; Secretary, Mrs. Armstrong: Treasurer, Mrs. Sheehan. A vote of thanks was accorded the retiring President and plso Mrs Burr for her interesting report on the recent Council meeting. Arrangements were made to raise funds to help the Federation. One new member was welcomed. The motto for the month: “If you would not be known to do a thin« never do it.” The competition resulted: Mrs. Sheehan 1; Mrs. Armstrong 2; Mrs. Richardson h.c. The competition for May is: “Something new from something old.’’ Soldiers’ parcels are to be despatched this month. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Thornton and Armstrong.

A hurried escape over flooded roads in order to fulfil a concert engagement in Gisborne was the experience last month of Mr. Robert Wilson, the Australian tenor. Mr. Henri Penn, pianist, and their manager, Mr. Nathan Scheinwald, who are at present v siting Greymouth. During the Whakatane floods they awoke one morning to find the streets flooded and water entering the hotel. Anxious to fulfil their Gisborne engagement, they decided to leave earlv. Miss Wando Ros, soprano, who accompanied them on their North Island tour, was the fourth member of the party. Rain was still faffing- when thev left Whakatane and thev had to make a detour back along the Rotorua road as the direct route was deep under water. Thev encountered manv slips which wore being cleared bv roadmen, but the worst obstacle was a wash-out. over which planks had to be placed for the car to run on. A few minutes after thev passed the torrent gouged out the road so completely that it was blocked for the day.
