GENERAL FREYBERG
LONDON, April 25. Mr. Attlee, in- the Commons, told Mr Bellenger that Mr. Churchill’s attention had been called to the publication of a despatch to the New Zealand Government from General Freyberg on the operations at Cassino. He added th/t the British Government received the despatch from the British G.O.C.
Mr. Bellenger: Isn’t it incongruous that a subordinate commander should send a despatch to his own Government. part of which is published, yet the Supreme Commander has not. sent a despatch ? . Mr. Attlee: The point is that the officer commanding the troops of any Dominion bas the right to report to his Government, but the question of despatches published here is another matter. Units of a New Zealand advance base paraded for inspection bv General Freyberg. who had just returned from the battle area at Cassinn. Drawn up on' a grass stretch near tnc base, the parade, under the command of Colonel Burrows, was representative of all arms of the service. The, G.O.C. later addressed officers and , n c.o’s. in the Lowry Hut. while m I the afternoon he inspected the base reception depot. Later in the week, General rieyberg visited number three general hospital and a. convalescent depot.
