COAL SHORTAGE
AUCKLAND, Feb. 26. So serious has the shortage' of coal and fuel become that continuity of work in many Auckland factories, most of which are engaged on essential war work, is already threatened. It is .openly stated that unless there is some improvement many plants will be forced to close during the winter. Concern is widespread, and the chairman of the publicity committee of the Auckland Electric Power Board (Mr. J. Park) announced today that a conference would be held on March 7 with representatives of the Auckland Manufacturers’ Association and the Chamber of Commerce. The main concexm of ma'nufacturers is that they are now forced to lead a hand-to-mouth existence and they have had no opportunity to build up reserve stocks. ’ It is only with the greatest difficulty that plants are being kept going, and it would require only a short stoppage in the mines or delay in supplies reaching Auckland before factories would be forced to close.
