TARAMAKAU BRIDGE

. The Hon. J- O’Brien, has received the following letter from the Minister of Works regarding the Taramakau River bridge on the Kumara- < Haupiri Junction highway;:— Dearth Sir.—On the 19th January you made representations to me regarding the condition of the above mentioned bridge and stated that you had inspected it at Kumara on the 15th idem in company with Henry Hamer and A. J. Birss. I arranged through the Chairman of the Main Highways 4 Board to have the bridge inspected by one of my Department’s engineers and a report recentlv received recommends that repairs to be carried out at a cost of £2,394 which amount provides for the renewal of an 80ft .rimu span and the replacement of 'longitudinal decking along with other minor repairs. However, at the present time exclusive control and management of the bridge is vested by warrant in the Kumara Borough Council, and unless written application is made by the Borough Council to the Main Highways Board to have the' repair work put in hand, it would not be possible for the Board to interfere. The Kumara Borough Council has been requested to apply* to the Main Highway Board’s Representative at Greytmouth to undertake the work'’’ ’ of repairs and as soon as this application is received arrangements will be made to proceed. (Signed) R. Semple, Minister of Works.
