Won by a length and a-half, with a head between second and third. Time 1.261, Counsel, who started at very long odds, was having his first run since he ran second to Dark Felt in the Melbourne Cup. He was ridden by an apprentice who had not previously won a race. Another amazing feature of the race was the failure of all the well-backed horses.
