STOCKTON NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent]. A special meeting of Ngakawau Miners’ Union was held in the Stockton Hall on Sunday, Mr. F. Connew. presiding, to deal with an unsatisfactory position re the working places in the mine, and also with nominations for representatives to the Buller Miners’ Central Committee. The chairman stated that the time had arrived when something more satisfactory would have to be adopted than the usual procedure of arguing every pay Friday for a make-up. t.o the miners. A very lengthy discussion took place as to reasons why the conditions were such as to warrant a visit from the Coal Mines Council. It was finally decided to request the Coal Mines Council to pay a visit to the mine at the earliest possible moment, and to examine the various districts in the mine. A special committee was set up to accompany the Coal Miners’ Council on its visit to the mine. Mr. F. Connew was nominated for the position of .President of the Buller Miners’ Central Committee. Mr. I. Tyler was nominated for the secretaryship. Mr. A. McArthur has returned after attending a meeting of the National Council of the United Mine Workers. Constable E. Gilmour and Mrs. Gilmour and daughter, Margaret left on Tuesday morning for Dunedin, where they will in future reside. Private J. Brookes has returned from overseas, and was a visitor to the township recently.

Mr. F. Connew was a visitor to Denniston on Tuesday. The women’s branch of the Labour Party held the usual • forty-fives tournament on Monday evening in the Labour Hall. The winners were: Mr. W. Berry l,*Mr. S. Chippendale 2.

Mr. J. Davey has returned after spending a long period in the Buller Hospital.
