The area licensed, for the production of the 1944 tobacco crop is 3,091 acres, which constitutes a record and is 131 acres in excess of last season’s area. This was announced to-night, by the Minister of Supply (Mr. Sullivan), who said that a levy of oneeighth of a penny per pound had been struck on all leaf of the 1944 harvest sold or to be sold for manufacture into tobacco and cigarettes. In the previous seasons the levy has been one-sixth of a penny per pound.
