Mr. A. O. Marsden who has been on the Greymouth Railway Staff left yesterday for Waimate, where he has; been transferred. Mrs Marsden accompanied him.

Dr. J. H. Blakelock, of New Plymouth, who has been appointed Medical Officer of Health in Christchurch, will arrive to-morrow. He is to succeed Dr. T. Fletcher Telford, whose retirement was announcd recently.

Mr Andersen Tyrer, English pianist and conductor, who has been examining throughout New Zealand for the Trinity College of Music (London), is at present in Wellington, He will give a series of pianoforte recitals in the Dominion before returning to Australia to undertake concert and broadcasting engagements.

Very Rev. Father L. R. Evatt, S.M., 8.A., has been appointed rector of St. Patrick’s College Silverstream, id. succession to the Verv Rev. Father J. J. Kennedy, who is to take charge of St. John’s College, Lismore, New South Wales. The new rector who ha s been a member of the staff of at Silverstream, was born in Wellington. He is the son of LieutenantColonel R. L. Evatt.

An old Canterbury turf votary, Mr. Horace Lunn, died on Sunday. He was for verv many years a leading horseman, and a successful trainer and owner, and when he retired he took up farming pursuits in the Amur! district, where he resided up to the time of his death. He was born in Welington in 1857, and rode his first race-when about eight years old on the Christchurch race course on a horse called Strike A Light. Mr. Lunn continued riding for his father until he had horses of his own, and took up training for various owners.

The death lias cocurred of Rev. Thomas Retallick (Richards, agdid 78. For 40 years he had been a minister in the Methodist Church in both the North and South Islands, and was for five years stationed at Hokitika. Mr Richards w.as bom in Victoria in 1866 and came to New Zealand in 1894, beginning his min- , istry at Palmerston North in 1896. In 1899 he was minister at Hokitika, later going to Christchurch in 1904. He transferred in 1909 to Blenheim and was president of the Methodist Conference from 1925 to 1941. He leaves a widow, six sons and one daughter.

The appointment of Mr A. iB. Rigg as a Conciliation Commissioner to replace Mr M. J. Reardon who retired from the position in December last wS*,.* K announced yesterday at Wellington by the Minister of Labour. Hon. P. C. Webb. Mr Rigg has been associated with the Department of Labour for 27 years, and has had an extensive training in industrial matters For many years he has been principally engaged on the registration of industrial unions, which brought him in contact with industrial organisation throughout the Dominion. His knowledge and experience in industrial matters generally will be of great value as a Conciliation Commissioner. —P.A.

Hon. A. H. Nordmeyer announced yesterday, at Wellington the appointment of Dr. T. R. Ritchie, of the. Department of Health, to the position of Deputy-Director General of Health, in succession to the late Dr. R. A. Shore. Dr. Ritchie has been an officer of the Department for nearly 28 years. In 1934 he was promoted to be Director .of the Division of Public Hygiene at the head office. This post he held till fie received his present promotion. The Minister also announced that Dr. Ritchie's present position as Director of the Division of Public Hygiene will be taken over by Dr. F. S. ’MacLean, who since 1941 has been responsible for head office work pertaining to the administration of health benefits under the Social Security Act. Prior to his transfer to the head office in 1941, he was Medical Officer of Health at Wellington for many years Press Assn.
