[Our Own Correspondent], HOKITIKA, Jan. 11. "There are bush fires in some parts of Westland keeping members oi the Forestry Department staft on the joo on Monday and Tuesday. South of Ross a silver pine cutter lost the whole of what he had cut and stacked ready for the market, valued at £5OO. Mr. Boddington has returned to the Ha&'st Messrs J. Wells and P. Keenan went to the Haast by the Gael on Saturday to take up their work for the Public Works Department. Mr L. J. Eager, who has been serving with the forces overseas returned to Hokitika on Saturday. Mrs. Eager and family, who had been in Christchurch, returned with him. Mr. and Mrs. C. Turk are on a holiday visit to the East Coast. The town was quiet yesterday, when Anniversary Day was observed, but a swimming carnival in the evening drew an attendance of (00. A feature was the female competitors’ efforts. The Municipal Band wac nresent. The chairman of the Baths Committee, Mr W. H Stopforth who expressed thanks for the representative pationage, said the committee would ho.ke h doiicition of £25 towards a learners’ pool. A visitor, Captain Smoat, of the United States, was besieged by small boys and presented a happv picture surrounded by boys seated on the lavvn in front of the mam stand Captain Smoat was no doubt telling the of war experiences and they were keen ‘listeners. Later on .he gave an exhibition of first rate diving which was thoroughly enjoyed by the crowd. Owin°- to his injured ear drums, the exhibition had to be curtailed.
