[Our Own Correspondent]. High tides. Pori of Westport: ’/ ' a.m. p.m. Friday, 7, 08.07 08.29 WESTPORT, Jan. 6. The Titoki, due this morning from Tarakohe with cement, loads coal for the north. Mr. „W. T. Grainger, of the Westport Telephone Exchange, has been transferred to Wellington, and is replaced bv Mr. L. Jamieson, of Greymouth. Miss E. Clarke of Wellington, who •has been spending holidays with her relatives, has returned. Mrs. Kerr, Lower Hutt, is the guest of Miss E. Findlay, Mill Street. Miss Lily Wheatley, of Auckland, is visiting Westport and is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. W. Taylor, Peel Street’ Rev. C. F. and Mrs. Saunders, of Richmond, Nelson, were visitors to Westport and have proceeded to Greymouth. Mr. and Mrs. D. Sloane and son, have returned to Christchurch after spending the holidays with relatives in Westport. Mr. Les Mason who has been visiting his parents has returned to Addington. Mr. Hird, of Taranaki, who has been visiting his brother, Mr. Reg Hird, of Karamea, has returned to his home. Mr. and Mrs. L. Kirby have returned to Nelson. Misses Joyce Becconsall and June Dunne, of Blenheim, who have been spending a short holiday as the guests of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Shaw, snr, left for Greymouth on their cycling tour. Mrs. Hill of Karamea, is a visitor to Westport. Sister M Buckland, formerly on the staff of the Buller District Hospital, was married yesterday in Christchurch, to Dr. King of Palmerston North. Mr. Tait, deputy Mayor of Oamaru. and Mrs. Tait, have spent a short visit to Westport, and leave for Greymouth to-day. Messrs O. Ball and A. Absolam have returned from a tour of the South Island. . Mr. G. Cox, of Auckland, visited Westport yesterday, and later proceeded to Reefton. The death occurred in the Buller District Hospital on Tuesday night of Mr. Thomas Porteous Ker at the age of 92. Deceased was born in Paisley, Scotland, and he lived in Dunedin for many years He is survived bv five daughters, Mesdames M. Gray (Westport), H. Wheller (Oamaru), C. McQueen. J. Smallman and J. Wallace (Dunedin) and one son. Mr. S. Ker, of the local railway staff. , . Whilst engaged in his work aNgakawau, Mr. Harry Casey, of tne railway workshop staff, met with a very painful accident. He slipped while using a crowbar which struck hi s face, resulting in the breaking of a cheek bone. Mr. Casey, was removed to the Buller District Hospital but his condition is not serious. The Buller A and P. Association has issued schedules for approaching annual show to be held on January 27 and 28, and it in anticipated that the show will be the success -it has proved to be in past years. Rainfall statistics for Westport show that the year 1943 was a much drier year than 1942. In 1943 the rainfall on 187 days was 68.28 inches, as compared with 72.24 inches on 206 during 1942. Sunshine in 1943 was 2234.4 hours on 330 days as against 1915.1 on 309 days during 1942 The coal mines of the Buller district resumed work yesterday after the holiday vacation.
