CHILD’S DEATH

CHAIRS WASHED IN CAUSTIC SODA BLENHEIM, Dec. IS. Caustic soda solution dripping from chairs which had been washed in it and left to dry caused the death of the 23-months’ old son of Mr and Mrs K. R. Woodhouse, of Roselands, Marlborough. The child was rushed to the Wairau Hospital suffering from a severely burned mouth, and his death occurred the following morning. Mrs Woodhouse commenced the cleaning of a number of kitchen chairs, which she had taken out on to the lawn. For the purpose she had mixed up a bowl of caustic soda, and after the chairs had been washed she threw the contents of the bowl away. For a moment her attention was distracted while she swilled the bowl under a tap, and when she turned round again she saw the baby running towards her with his hand at his mouth. It was obviously distressed, and had apparently licked drops of soda from the chairs
